A retrofit project has been carried out at the Luis de Góngora Municipal Public Library in Villaviciosa de Odón, demonstrating how it is possible to significantly improve the lighting in an existing space without the need for construction work. The starting point was a set of severely deteriorated screens that no longer met functional requirements or current criteria for efficiency and visual comfort. To make use of the original space, a sample of the existing luminaire was analysed and new luminaires with the same dimensions were developed, allowing for a direct, clean replacement that was perfectly integrated into the original installation. The new luminaires incorporate high-efficiency LED technology, with light distribution optimised for reading and study spaces. A colour temperature suitable for libraries has been used, favouring homogeneous lighting, without glare and with high visual comfort, improving the perception of space and user concentration. In the perimeter area where the shelves are located, specific profiles designed for vertical bathing were incorporated. This solution ensures uniform lighting on vertical planes, improves the legibility of book spines and eliminates unwanted shadows, increasing both the functionality and visual quality of the environment. In addition, glare control and proper light management allow compliance with the recommended levels for this type of space, optimising energy consumption and reducing maintenance requirements. All this has been achieved without interfering with the ceiling, respecting the existing architecture and minimising the impact of the work. The difference between the previous and current installations is remarkable, both in terms of functionality and light quality. The result is a technical and efficient solution, fully adapted to the existing space, which improves visual comfort and the reading experience without the need for invasive works.
