What are lighting control systems?

A lighting control system is the hardware and software that switches, dims and automates luminaires individually or in groups. It goes beyond a switch: it defines scenes, schedules, responses to occupancy or daylight sensors, and supervision of the installation.

In offices, hotels, retail, education and industry, control turns LED lighting into a tool for efficiency, visual comfort and maintenance. The aim is the right light, at the right time, in the right place.

Why install a control system?

Without control, even a well-designed LED scheme still wastes energy when spaces are empty or daylight is enough. Control cuts that waste and ties lighting to how the building is actually used.

Choosing a protocol is an architecture decision, not a catalogue comparison. These are the most common options in interior lighting:

What are DALI and DALI-2?

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is an open standard built for lighting. Each luminaire or driver has its own address: they can be dimmed individually or in groups, scenes can be stored, and device status can be read. DALI-2 adds device certification, better interoperability and, with parts such as DALI-2 DT8, tunable white in a single device.

It is the reference choice for offices, hotels and commercial buildings that need a robust, wired, scalable system that can connect to a BMS.

Casambi and wireless control

Casambi uses Bluetooth mesh. It fits refurbishments, retail and spaces where bus cabling is difficult or costly. Scenes, grouping and commissioning are handled from an app, with compatible luminaires and devices.

Other protocols on a project

  • 1-10V: simple analogue dimming, less granularity than DALI.
  • KNX: whole-building automation; lighting sits alongside HVAC, blinds and security.
  • DMX: more common in entertainment and dynamic architectural lighting.

Many projects mix them: DALI on an office floor and a gateway to KNX or the building supervisor.

How to choose the right system for your project

Before choosing a brand or protocol, define how the space is used:

  • Building type and applicable requirements (offices, hotel, retail, industry).
  • Need for individual dimming, groups, or zone on/off only.
  • Occupancy sensors, daylight sensors and time schedules.
  • Tunable white or human centric lighting.
  • Integration with HVAC, motorisation or an existing BMS.
  • New build versus refurbishment (bus cabling vs wireless).
  • Who will operate it: facility manager, reception or end user.

A common mistake is to pick the protocol from the product instead of from operations. The system must be maintainable, documented and consistent with the luminaires (DALI-2 drivers, Casambi modules, and so on).

Applications: offices, hotels, retail and industry

Offices

Control enables tunable white, meeting scenes and savings in circulation areas. DALI-2 with sensors per workspace is a typical architecture.

Hotels

Scenes for lobby, restaurant and guestroom; integration with access cards and housekeeping hours. Guests feel comfort; the hotel cuts consumption in shared spaces.

Retail and supermarkets

Groups per aisle or window, opening/closing scenes and dimming by occupancy. Control also protects sensitive goods by limiting hours at full output.

Industry and logistics

Detection in racking aisles, safety lighting levels and supervision of luminaires in high halls, where maintenance is expensive.

Value is not only in the protocol: it is in group design, programming and commissioning. Poorly addressed DALI does not save energy; a simple system done well does.
